I went as wide as possible and still kept 6 points. Lead the 2 obviously, play defense if possible.

Happy Labor Day. Summer flew by again.

Can't see tossing a 5 to opponent and kept 6 points to start.

Can't be tossing points to the crib at the juncture so no 2s and no 5.

Here's the deal. The dealer is at -8, but we're at -13. We're likely playing at least 3 more hands, but if we do, the dealer is likely to win unless we are significantly above average. That's 5 hands to the dealer to our 4. Our 4 need to cover the 38 points before their five cover 33. Which means our 4 cover 38 before their *3* cover 33 -- ie, we need to win in 2.5 hands.

So, we're looking to both play defence to keep the dealer back AND looking for hands that can get us points -- which means we need to be praying for a cut card if possible.

Among the possible 6 points holds:
There's the flush which doesn't seem to have a whole lot of growth
There the 2225 which probably has the largest growth (888, 6666 get 12), but is danger in the crib.
there is the 2258 which is in the middle of everything and has the best crib balk.

Lets go 2258 today. The cut card didn't help much. We play defence and maybe get lucky next hand.
scottcrib says: Yes, that's the intended struggle today. Don't overlook the 8 point hand.

Great puzzle today. I really don't want to fall behind the pace at this score, so I think it's worth the risk to throw the 5-8, one of the less dangerous 5 throws.
Eolus619 says: Morning Hawthorne..your discard is fine by me..we play a game of choices ..devil’s advocate for educational purposes ..you tossed a 5-8 which averages six in the crib..it can run into frequent dealer discards ..7/8..6/7..8/9..7/9..your keep gets cut help from 12 cards..you need a bingo cut of a deuce or four ..5 cards total ..again..no quarrel with your choice.the bingo cuts solve Pone’s problem …..just a fyi to ponder ..always enjoy reading your reasons

Hawthorn says: Thanks, Eolus. You're right that the lack of improvement for 2-2-2-9 keep is a big, possibly critical, downside.

Obviously I don’t like throwing dealer points when he is only 33 away but I feel we need to maximize our chances to get as far into 4th street as we can-the flush hold improves to at least 8 with every cut but a 3- and should peg reasonably well as a disguised hand -the 22 discard is also somewhat mitigated by the 2 we kept in our hand so the discard becomes much more palatable in that regard-Doggone good puzzle Scott!

dph says: The pessimist in me says that the cut will be the 3D helping the crib more than us but teasing us with a single-point gain. Concur on the quality of the puzzle and discards.

Throwing a 5 across the board with opp sitting -8 with 3 counts to home ... I'm gonna pass. My 2nd alternative is actually to hold the flush.

Unfavorable positioning for this hand which nabs easy upside 8 points on a X cut. 2 or 8 on the cut would have made next round very comfortable.

I picked tossing 2-9 to lower the crib points for the opponent while keeping 6 points in hand.

Looking to land a stronger hand next round for what looks like our final deal of the game.

To expand on ryman554's numbers, from (83-88*) we want to be dealing from 96. Our opponent is short and we are unlikely to reach that positional hole this hand. Not risking the 5-8 pitch to hold an 8-count. The 2-2 pitch is not as dangerous because we hold an additional 2. Am pitching a defensive 2-9 and taking my safe 6-count.
MarktheShark says: At this position we should be at (86-96*), so we are -3 and Dealer is -8. Although some will move that back 26 holes, so one or both players will be + (positive).
