It pays to Flush. Tossing 4-5 to my crib. Start with 9 points in the hand.

I'll try the flush, but 5-5 and 5h-8 are decent options too.

This feels like a "Don't overthink this" puzzle, but I'm sure JQT will find some interesting answer to befuddle the mind. I'd rather play aggressively at this point, but be aware that 7 cut could leave your opp sitting with 20 or 24.

Triple play. dec
Inushtuk1 says: Hi dec. What do you mean by the triple play? I asked you once before. If you answered me, I missed it somehow.
TheGrumpyUncle says: Curious too . . . I'm guessing Flush with Straight and a 15
Rosemarie44 says: That's what I see, too.
dec says: the main hand potential, the crib potential and depending on their lead and estimating their hand could be offensive pegging. dec

Flush starts us with 9 before the cut. 4-5 to crib is a top tier discard to own crib. Good pegging prospects as well.

After what I said yesterday, with a second sentence that wouldn't die:

Synopsis: Toss (5 5) as a Dealer Discard is the strongest discard in all of Cribbage, and it has a Crib Value of nearly Nine Points! That is not a hypothetical figure: an "average" means that mathematically, if you examine all of those instances over a lifetime that you place Toss (5 5) into your Own Crib, and add up all the points you obtain from it, and then divide that amount by the number of instances, you WILL (guaranteed) get a figure (within a decimal place) of around 8.8 Points (Schell), just the same as a coin-flip of Heads will ALWAYS trend toward occurring 50% of the time. Our Hand only gets help from One Card in Cribbage (the Cut Card), while our Crib gets help from THREE CARDS: (the Cut Card, as well as Pone's two discards). 🧀 🍷 🌿

One might think I would Toss (5 5) as well today. I would, but only as my Second Choice. With the FLUSH of (3h 4h 5h 8h), we begin with Nine Points, and all but Six Non-Heart-Suited Cut Cards (AsAdAc, 9s9d9c) add to this. And, while Toss (5 5) is indeed the King of all Dealer Discards, Toss (4 5) is no slouch, as it 'chimes in' at 6.48 Points (Schell). 🏋🏼‍♂️

Let's retain the FLUSH and Toss (4c 5d) today. After the 7 of Spades Cut Card, we now have Thirteen Points in our Hand, with prospects for a good Crib. 🍡

I tossed the 55. Didn't see the flush. But I'll stand by that toss based purely on the 7 cut (for 10 in the hand, and the pone discarding a safe X6 in my crib to make a dozen) and it's now 110-100*

I did not see the flush either or I would have chosen it. We are in desperation mode here and I need a good cut ... Opponent is in position and we are very short.

A “working “ flush and a five to my crib….cut help from 12/13 ranks and the remaining hearts … sign me up ..PS.today..good example that the Big Hand rule is the answer until it isn’t
Eolus619 says: whoops fat fingers ..cuts from 11/13 ranks not 12
Eolus619 says: a btw from Liam this morning.I have no quarrel with a 5-5 discard choice..but it is down the list of point producers https://cliambrown.com/cribbage/?data=3H4H4C5H5D8HY&dch

I couldn’t resist throwing 55 into my crib. Again.
Eolus619 says: morning…yep…Ras’s Big Hand rule applies here if you want to use it ..after tossing 5-5…the remaining keep…3448 can cut to 12
Assman says: Thank you for the Big Hand rule reminder. Only toss 5-5 if your remaining keep can reach 12. Got it!
Eolus619 says: and ..both Ras’s big and small hand rules apply , according to him, 95% of the time ..you are entering elite territory when you know when the 5% applies❗️

At 86*-91 playing an Offense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:

__________________Our
Offense_____Hand__Pegs_Crib_Total____W2 %_____W3 %
3-4H-5H-8____12.13+3.76+6.19=22.08____25.7_____32.8
3-4-4-5D_____11.70+3.67+5.51=20.88____19.9_____27.1
3-4-4-8_______8.26+3.11+8.67=20.04____18.9_____28.3

Offense_________L2 %____L3 %
3-4H-5H-8________28.5____55.7
3-4-4-5D_________28.5____61.2
3-4-4-8__________25.2____59.7

3-4H-5H-8 is best for expected averages by 1.20pts. and is considerably best for Win %s. Over the two deals it is also very slightly lowest for Loss %s. So, I'll select the 4C-5D to discard.

After the 7 cut I'll play Offense to the lead.

I kept the flush in this case, with the following reasoning: this guarantees 9 pts in hand and we need at least 9, or even better 10+ to get to 4th street entry. The flush improves on 333, 44, 55, 6666, 7777, 888, any ten card. 3 4 5 8 gives us some decent playability. 4 5 to the crib improves on any ten card, 6666, 55, the possibility of the other two 4s, and 333 as well as AAAA and low card combinations possibly. The 7 cut gets our hand alone past the minimum we need. With some luck in the crib and some luck in pone having a lousy hand, we should be in good condition, it seems to me!

Reading the other comments makes me realize I totally missed on the potential of 3448, despite seeing the obvious benefits of throwing 55 to the crib! Amazing how easy it is to miss stuff that immediately seems clear the moment you see someone point it out. Still feel good going with the flush though, but I definitely see the logic and strength of the 3448 hand and 55 to crib.
Synapsid says: Added: Hand also improves on 2222 of course as well.
