I usually lean towards playing the position of the player farther up the board, but today we need a big play to put us right back in this. I think 52-53 is the point where I'd flip this discard.
Daily Cribbage Pro Scrimmage Score: 121 to 80 SP: 2765 Discards: 1. T-K 2. Q-K 3. 3-Q 4. A-4 5. J-K 74-45* 6. 9-K 7. 6-K Wordle 1,475 X/6* ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟩 ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟩 ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟩 🟩⬜⬜⬜🟩 🟩⬜⬜⬜🟩 🟩🟩⬜⬜🟩 A lesson today in starting with words that end in (?). It really limits what you can do after that, Guess 5 even used it twice. guideontheside says: That's why a lot of times, my 2nd guess doesn't include the letter I got right, trying for 5 new possible letters (or letters to eliminate, which almost tells me more!)
fentesk says: Oof, don't know where I went wrong today on Scrimmage. Same discards and I thought I pegged well (42-20) but lost 120-121 after being up 110-74*. tevdodd says: Did you play an 8th hand? I was at 116 prior to last hand, so was able to get there after pegging my 31 for 2. We know they had 12, could've pegged 6, and conceivably could've discarded 7-8 for 12 more pushing them to 104 while you were still 114? tevdodd says: My pegs were 44-24, this actually may be a lesson in board position. I didn't have a bigger peg spread, but pushing yourself those 4 pegs down the board, not being afraid to leave a couple for your opponent, is likely your cause, I'm guessing this happened in hand 2. fentesk says: Yes, the 8th hand was a typical Scrimmage hand with pone getting 7-7-8-8-9 following the previous 3-5-5-7-7. Pegging has never been my strong suit so I have no doubt I left some pegs out somewhere as I fully expect I should have been able to win on my hand count of hand 7 (which seems to be what the setup was today as it was built to make most lose if you didn't). It does look like if I'd played the 3 on the A lead in hand two it may have made the difference. |

Don't see any choice here other than to toss dealer the 5J. |

Is this a needed keep or a hopeful defensive discard. I choose the formal. These type of games happen to all of us once in a while. dec |

Down by 20 with your opponent dealing and on 3rd street? I would say that’s a fortuitous time to keep a 12 point hand open ended for 24-if we cut a picture or a 5 there is a good chance we will get skunked but unless we are in Raleigh in a match play environment we should always play for the win |

Desperation move here with a lot of ground to make up. I’m not too worried about what I’m throwing in the crib, just focusing on getting down the board. |

RAS used to routinely remove puzzles that had little educational value. He removed several of mine over the years, and I often thanked him for it later!
We have a few ways to make sure that we have challenging puzzles on this site: Post a puzzle only after you are sure it will be a challenge or of interest or educational value to other players. Sometimes we get excited or emotional over a given discard, but then later in hindsight, we find that there is really just one solution. The other way to make sure that we have challenging puzzles on this site is to have the moderators REMOVE MORE OF THOSE THAT DON'T APPEAR TO BE CHALLENGING. Any more thoughts or ideas? 🧨 ✨ 🧩 Eolus619 says: Hi JQT…1) self editing 2) moderator editing ..#2 most important tevdodd says: Just so the not challenging ones don't get to be like 3 in a row. If there's 1 or 2 day(s) a week of "Just don't overthink this" that's fine. Obviously we really want to have 30 days of queue at all times if possible. JQT says: This is why I tend to tread lightly: players can almost always learn something from almost any puzzle, maybe about averting a SKUNK, etc. RAS also used to post very good puzzles, a lot of them! I am trying to keep about 30 days queued up, and I added eight puzzles of my own for July, mainly to get the Dealer-Based Puzzles up to 50% for the month. ♦ ⚖ ♦ 🛠 ♦ |

Before dch I probably would have never thought of tossing J5 to opponent, but after seeing the situation, realized there wasn’t much of a choice! So I can’t say much about the challenge, but confirmed I might actually be learning some thing by being here! Thanks to all for the education! |

While today's puzzle may not be the most challenging , it serves a great reminder, especially to newer peggers to check to board position of both you and your opponent, look at the cards in your hand then make your discard decision. |

At 48-68* playing a Defense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:
________________Dlr's Defense___Hand__Pegs____Crib____Total___W4 %____W5 % 7-7-8-8____14.96+(-2.67)+(-8.09)=4.20____6.8_____13.4 5-7-7-8_____9.22+(-2.65)+(-4.02)=2.55____1.5______8.3 5-7-8-8_____9.04+(-2.70)+(-4.04)=2.30____1.5______8.4 Defense______L4 %____L5 % 7-7-8-8_______48.9____78.3 5-7-7-8_______34.3____80.0 5-7-8-8_______34.2____79.8 7-7-8-8 is best for expected averages by 1.65pts. and is very much best for Win %s. Although 5-7-8-8 and 5-7-7-8 are both very much lower for Loss %s I'll select the 5-J to discard. After the 4D cut I'll lead a 7 and play Offense: Lead_____________Our Pegging Points 7________________________1.11 8________________________1.02 JQT says: It's usually best to lead an 8 Card when we hold Middle Cards as Pone, because if it gets PAIRED, we can safely triple and score (24-6) for PAIRS Royal. That's overshadowed with some Hands, however, as we see today, because an 8 Card Lead would not only allow the Dealer an easy way to immediately 'dump' a 5 Card, but doing so would get us into potential trouble of either having to play to a Count of Twenty-One with our second 8 Card and allowing the Dealer to 'nab' an easy (31=2), or allowing a possible Run if the pegging proceeds: 8? (8) 5! (13) 7 (20) etc. Hence, the 7 Card Lead exception to the 8 Card Lead Rule is in full force today! 🍷 🖐🏼✌🏼 📗 7️⃣ fentesk says: Interesting. This is one that Colvert calls out in his pegging chapter and he pushes the 8 lead. Good to see other arguments for thought. |
