Changing my mind ... I want to toss 2-3 now ... kal79 says: I thought the same thing after I tossed 7-7. Hoping for a 6789 from our opponent in the crib… |

Can’t really see any other viable options-the 2/3/9/J probably pegs a bit better but severely dilutes the hand potential |

I like keeping 779 together and I prefer 23 to the crib, another nice cut |

Whether you discard the 2-3 or 7-7, every cut helps. Keeping all mid/highs, decent chance for pair of sevens in the end. |

Although (2 3) is a better rated crib throw than the pair of 7's, do I want to transfer most of my energy to the crib or leave it in my hand here?...Definitely an interesting arrangement. Something doesn't seem quite "right" about the hand left after tossing (2 3), which is admittedly one of my favorite tosses, so today I'll go with the mid-pair. Following reasons: Rather than rely on "one" cut card (as demonstrated today by the 8 cut), the pair can still get help from 3 other cards in the crib. (For other cuts as well, of course!) Next, this hand seems much more pegging-friendly if wanting to choose a more defensive strategy in limiting pone pegs. After the 8 cut, it looks like the wrong choice today...but hey, I could still have a 20-pt crib, so I'll keep my chin up! Ras2829 says: Hi MiketheExpert: Good insight and 2-3-9-J has higher potential hand score by nearly a full point. Any cut card adds value to 2-3-9-J except 7/8 and either of those are a great boost to the 7-7 in the crib. Inushtuk1 says: Hi Ras. Yesterday did you keep it your way on offense only because the (5-10) was suited? Would you have played it differently on defense or optimal? And what would you have done on offense, optimal, and defense if the X-Cards were not a pair? thanks for any advice. Ras2829 says: Hi Inushtuk1: Let me see if I can respond to each of your points as presented above. turns out looking at A-2-2-5-10-10), discard of 5-10D, would still prevail on defense or optimal even though closer. The value of the 5-10 discard to own crib packs enough weight in any strategy to have the edge in combined values. If the X-point cards had not been a pair as with 10-J, J-Q, Q-K, or J-K, the 5-J or 5-K would be the discard choice as available as those are of even higher average than was the suited 5-10 of yesterday. Inushtuk1 says: Thanks Ras. |

Middle cards relatively less valuable in own crib. Let’s 2-3 it. |

What would the toss be if it was pone's crib? zeke76 says: J2? MiketheExpert says: Either J2 or J9 would seem to be the only considerations. Inushtuk1 says: (J-9) from me as Pone at this score. Inushtuk1 says: Pone should keep the Sweet 16. kal79 says: If it were me it would be J2 |

Keeping the Magic Eleven in my hand. I would have had 12 points in my hand the other way; but as Scott said, either way, all cuts help. Pone may have tossed (X-6), (X-8), or (X-9). So no need to despair yet. Inushtuk1 says: First play out tossing (7-7). Pone tossed me (4-4). So I got the 12 in my Crib. |

Thank you all for the warm welcome yesterday! Tough puzzle today Ras, 2-3 and 7-7 both seem like viable throws to our crib. Both bring value to the crib, 2-3 is a bit more certain to garner 2 or 4 points, but the 7-7 leaves the door open for a jackpot if our opponent throws an 8.
It’s looking like a lot of you threw 2-3 (and it paid off), but I’ll dive into why I went with 7-7. I tossed the 7-7 for a similar reason as yesterday, looking to maintain some pegging flexibility and net 3 or 4 points as the dealer. Seeing the 8 be cut hurts a little (a lot) and is a good reminder of the upside of the 7-7-9-J hand. So, I’ll hope for a X-9-X opening pegging sequence where I can get my 31 and then either just a last card or maybe a pair on the next sequence. Not going to pair and early 2 or 3 lead though. While I want to get my money’s worth pegging, it’s not worth getting reckless on the first hand. It hurts to see I lost out on a 10 point hand, but I can’t forget my crib now holds at least 6. In the end, we’ll get the jackpot in the crib I mentioned above through the cut. Hopefully we were tossed either a 6 or 9 from our opponent to really make this crib pop 🧨 kal79 says: Correction, I meant to say I lost out on a 12 pointer, not a 10! MiketheExpert says: Welcome kal79, great insights, and definitely encourage you to keep posting! Inushtuk1 says: Welcome kal79. What MtE said. james500 says: Hi Kal. 7 7 to my crib. Of course I’m wishing I had thrown 2 3 but the turn up is down to luck, not skill. Ras2829 says: Hi RubyTuesday: Don't despair: Most frequent discards made by n/d feature a mid-card and Q-K. Just one 6-7-8-9 assures 12 points in crib. Also, if n/d picked up 6-8 or 8-9, likely to be of limited or no use in hand with 7-7 among dealer's six. So, crib could be 20 or more. The odds are high that the dozen missed in the hand will show in the crib. RubyTuesday says: Thank you! |

2-3-9-J: Improves with AAAA, 222, 333, 4444, 5555, 6666, 999 + 15xXs = 40 cuts = 40/46 = 87.0% up to 6/7/8pts with AAAA, 222, 333, 4444, 10101010, JJJ = 21 cuts. Plus 10 diamond cuts for 1pt extra for his nob = 10/46 = 0.22pt.
7-7-9-J: Improves with AAAA, 5555, 6666, 77, 8888, 999, 10101010, JJJ = 28 cuts = 28/46 = 60.9% up to 5/6/12pts with 77, 8888, 10101010 = 10 cuts. Plus 10 diamond cuts for 1pt extra for his nob = 10/46 = 0.22pt. Position: As First Dealer positional hole is at 8pts so I'll play Defense but try to score the average 16pts or more safely. Pegging: I think 2-3-9-J will peg better. Summary: 7-7-9-J is better for starting value by 1pt but 2-3-9-J has more cuts for improvement and 21 cuts for 6-8pts compared to 10 cuts for 5-12pts with 7-7-9-J. It also should peg better. So I'll throw the 7-7. Eolus619 says: Welcome back! Ras2829 says: Hi Coeurdelion: Sure missed your wonderful analysis this past week. Vacation, ill, or just pursuing other interests? At 0*-0 playing a Defense strategy for the pegging the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:
_______________Pone's Defense___Hand_Pegs____Crib_Total___W9 %____W10 % 2-3-9-J____5.26+(-1.96)+5.89=9.19____33.9____46.8 7-7-9-J____4.30+(-2.13)+6.95=9.12____33.5____47.2 Defense______L9 %____L10 % 2-3-9-J_______26.6____27.1 7-7-9-J_______25.3____26.2 2-3-9-J is better for expected averages by 0.07pt. but 7-7-9-J is even on Win %s and slightly lower for Loss %s. Even so as it's the very start of the game I'll decide on expected averages and select 7-7 to discard. After the 8 cut I'll play Defense to the lead. Eolus619 says: Welcome back Ras2829 says: Hi HalscribCLX: How nice for you to again occupy space on this site. Choosing defense to include the pegging, play off the lead although would take two points for 15 on a 5 or 9 lead. |
