That was my decision, I’ll be back later to see what the rest of you threw, and why 10 8 to dealer’s crib wasn’t a good idea!

If i was 6-7-7-8 I would have done 10-5. I will not keep a ten hand to give up two at least. Not at start of game. dec

This is easy. As non dealer first job is to find a defensive (ish) toss that doesn't wreck our hand.

8T keeps our double run, 5, and is not suicidal as 5t or 87 would be.

As DEC stated above the hold would be 6778 if it were two sevens compared to 2 sixes-not willing to hold the 2 extra points here to discard the dangerous 10-5-this hold also leaves us open to a 4 cut helping us-which magically appeared-this is one of the worst pegging hands as a pone,so lead the 6 and try to limit the damage

Keep the five, reduce hand value by 2 points. Be grateful for the cut.

I also opted for the 5667 hold in Reno last month. So I apologize for the 100% figure after 9 votes. However, the reason for posting the puzzle is that a 7 was cut, and I lost the game by 2 points. So of course my initial reaction was I mistskenly didn't adhere to the traditional thinking of holding for maximum count as the first non-dealer. But we all know that we don't develop our future strategy based on one cut. I still feel holding the double run without giving up 510 is the proper way to go.
mrob2199 says: Totally agree with that assessment Dan-we can only make the best informed decisions at the time we make them
SallyAnn3 says: I ruined the 100%. I heard Joy Shimp in my ear teaching me to always go big on the first toss, even if it is a 5-face. I do it less and less now ater being on this site because you and Rob are in my other ear now!
thelawnet says: I don't think we can worry about right play when we then get bad luck. It's right to hit 12 Vs dealer 10, even if the next card turns out to be a 10. You need to worry more about bad play, like mine yesterday when I held JJQ in order to have a pair at 119*-115 and then played the J to bring the total over 20, pone played all his small cards and I ended up playing JQ for 1 rather than holding the JJ for 3... That's bad play and it cost me the game. Bad luck is something else....
Ras2829 says: Cribbage is a game of hundreds of decisions relative to hand retention, discard choices, strategy choices, how to respond in pegging sequences, and positional considerations. Make the decision which seems appropriate at the time and don't celebrate excessively when successful or lament when it seems to backfire. Avoid kicking yourself when down. It's hard enough to get back up even when unbruised!
JQT says: It's not important that a given discard choice in Cribbage works all of the time; rather, it's only important if the choice made is the best we have under the circumstances, and is therefore the decision that we believe will work in our favor *most* of the time, over all of the other choices. The correct discard is the one that, having all the information you can study, learn, and obtain in the days, months, and years that follow a particular decision, is the discard that you would make again all over again the next time when in that same exact position, and when that identical card arrangement occurs.

Every cut is helpful to me.
With 5-6-7-8 in hand, 10-6 is even less likely than usual to be helpful to my opponent, since there are fewer cards in circulation to produce a 10-5 fifteen, 6-6 pair, or various runs in the crib.

6 lead.

Great hand and a less risky toss to opponent at this time. See that I concur with others. Have a great day!

Rather throw 8-10 than 5-10.

Boom goes the dynamite
horus93 says: Can't say I didn't consider 5-T. After all it's often "only" a 4-6 point crib and a 20 point hand would be a gamechanger. Still it's usually best to make the "optimal" toss at 0-0* imho.
horus93 says: As for the lead - definitely the 7 with that cut and play into a run. I don't care if dealer pegs a lot, I'm trying to get as near 18 as possible and what he scores is almost irrelevant.

Agree with those above with this hold. Tough loss Dan in Reno, but I think this is the way to go. Like leading from strength here with a 6. If opponent plays a 9 for 15-2, I’ll dump the 5. As Rob says above, this is a terrible pegging hand for pone. Try to limit the damage.

Just an echo to others this day. Had double run contained two 7's, would have tossed 5-X since A, 2, or any middle card provide a high scoring hand of 16 or more points. Will lead the 6 as pointed out by mfetchCT425 and plan to dump the rive next card on the table.

If I can hold a dozen points, then I don't mind tossing 5-X into my opponent's crib. Today, I can't, so I didn't.

Unless you know a 9 or 8 is going to be cut, toss 8-10. If you know what's going to be cut, please give me 6 number for the lottery.

Day 15 of isolation. Hanging around the house used to mean "lazy bastard", now its "responsible citizen". Yeah, that's it. I'm responsible.
Ras2829 says: Hi Gougie00: Somehow "responsible citizen" sounds most honorable. Still does not seem to fit my daughter who has not been gainfully employed in 33 years.
Gougie00 says: How about 6 lottery numbers?
Ras2829 says: Hi Gougie00: She could have 6/6 - a winner for life and lose the ticket over night.

Three likely hands I think - 6-6-7-8 (5-10), 5-6-6-7 (8-10) and 5-6D-7-8 (6C-10):

6-6-7-8: 10pts - 7½pts (Schell: 7.41) = +2½pts

5-6-6-7: 8pts - 4¾pts (Schell: 5.10) = +3¼pts

5-6D-7-8: 6pts - 4¼pts (Schell: 4.31) = +1¾pts

Potential:

6-6-7-8: Improves with AAAA, 2222, 3333, 555, 66, 777, 888, 9999 = 27 cuts = 27/46 = 58.7% up to 14/16/17/20pts with AAAA, 2222, 66, 777, 888, 9999 = 20 cuts.

5-6-6-7: Improves with 2222, 3333, 4444, 555, 66, 777, 888, 9999 + 15xXs = 42 cuts = 42/46 = 91.4% up to 12/14/15/16pts with 2222, 3333, 4444, 555, 66, 777, 888, 9999 = 27 cuts.

5-6D-7-8: Improves AAAA, 2222, 3333, 4444, 555, 66, 777, 888, 9999 + 15xXs = 46 cuts = 46/46 = 100.0% up to 9/12/14pts with 4444, 555, 66, 777, 888, 9999 = 19 cuts.

Position:

At game start as Pone I'll play Offense as positional hole is 18pts and on average we'll score 10pts.

Pegging:

5-6D-7-8 should peg best playing Offense.

Summary:

5-6-6-7 is best for starting value by ¾pt and has the second best number of cuts for improvement and the highest number of cuts for a very good/excellent hand although 6-6-7-8 has the best maximum at 20pts. So I'll throw 8-10.

At 0-0* playing a Defense strategy the dynamic expected averages and Win/Loss %s are:

_______________Pone's
Defense__Hand__Pegs____Crib____Total___W9 %____W10 %
5-6-6-7___11.83+(-3.22)+(-4.56)=4.05____36.9____32.5
5-6D-7-8___9.57+(-2.93)+(-3.88)=2.76____30.8____28.6
6-6-7-8___13.13+(-2.87)+(-7.62)=2.64____39.4____29.5

Defense_____L9 %____L10 %
5-6-6-7______39.1____44.3
5-6D-7-8_____37.4____46.8
6-6-7-8______45.9____47.7

5-6-6-7 is best for expected averages by 1.29pts and is slightly best for Win %s and lowest for Loss %s. So I'll select 8-10 to discard.

After the 4 cut I'll lead a 6 and play Offense:

Lead_____________Our Pegging Pts.
6_____________________1.58
7_____________________1.49
5_____________________0.82
